Camel Driver ....

The above picture is a monument that is at the cemetery in Quartzsite, AZ and has an interesting story. In 1856, Jefferson Davis (later president) approved a plan to experiment with the use of camels for freighting in the AZ desert and 74 camels were shipped there from Arabia along with a caretaker by the name of Haiji Ali. His name became "Hi Jolly" by those who worked with him. The camels proved to be a success but the War Department abandoned the experiment before they could reach their full potential and the camels were left in this area to shift for themselves. They survived for many years but eventually died off.
